Lessons for the US from UK Experiences with Forced Marriage Protection Orders and Abusive Transnational Marriages

This webinar features Anne-Marie Hutchinson, partner at Dawson Cornwell Solicitors in London and one of England’s leading family lawyers representing potential victims and threatened victims of female genital mutilation, honour based violence, and forced marriage. In this webinar Anne-Marie provides an overview of forced marriage in the UK including statistics from the Forced Marriage Unit, as well as a dissection of the criminalization debate.  She also provides analysis of the issue of abandoned spouses as well as the utility and effectiveness of the UK forced marriage protection order.

Strategies for Safe Relocation, Identity and Privacy for Forced Marriage Survivors

This webinar features Valenda Applegarth, Senior Staff Attorney with the national Relocation Counseling and Identity Protection Initiative. The webinar discusses strategies for relocation in forced marriage cases, including how to safely stay in touch with clients, and ways that technology can assist and compromise individuals’ privacy both pre- and post-relocation. The webinar also covers the fundamentals of identity change, as well as the challenges and benefits of pursuing such an option in forced marriage cases.

Early and Forced Marriage in African Communities

This webinar features Dr. Ramatu Bangura, Director of Youth Programs at the Sauti Yetu Center for African Women and Families in New York City. Sauti Yetu works with immigrant and refugee girls from countries with higher rates of early and forced marriage such as Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, and Niger. In this webinar, Dr. Ramatu Bangura discusses the complex challenges individuals facing forced marriage from these communities encounter as well as the findings from Sauti Yetu’s original study on early and forced marriage in West African communities in New York City.
